Facial paralysis (Bell's palsy)
Bell's palsy and other facial nerve paralysis — approached with acupuncture and moxibustion at Acupuncture Healing Center Chicago.
Overview
About facial paralysis (bell's palsy)
Bell's palsy in TCM is understood as Wind-Cold invasion of the facial channels, most often striking suddenly with no obvious trigger. Outcomes depend heavily on how quickly treatment begins — the first two weeks are the highest-yield window, and acupuncture is one of the interventions with the strongest evidence for functional recovery.
Treatment
How we treat it
We typically see facial palsy patients as soon as possible after onset, sometimes daily in the first two weeks then tapering. Fine needling across the facial muscles combined with moxibustion and points on the affected side of the body is standard. Most patients achieve substantial recovery within 4–8 weeks; delayed presentations take longer.
