Arthritis
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and joint inflammation — approached with acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal formulas at AHC Chicago.
Overview
About arthritis
Arthritis is the painful inflammation of joints. The state of the inert and soft tissue including tendon, sinews, cartilage, bone, and musculature determine the nature of arthritic pain. Different factors such trauma, overuse, environmental factors (cold, heat, dampness, dryness), internal health (metabolism, digestion, circulation) overall strength and weakness can all impact the state of these joint structures. Arthritis in TCM is classified as a Bi (obstruction) syndrome with various sub-types based on the aforementioned factors, such as Wind-Damp, Sinew deficiency, Blood-stasis, Damp-Heat, Cold-bi, and more. Distinguishing which pattern predominates in a specific patient shapes both point selection and herbal strategy.
Treatment
How we treat it
Local acupuncture around affected joints, moxibustion for Cold-Damp presentations, and herbal formulas targeting the identified pattern form the core of care. For rheumatoid patients we coordinate around any ongoing rheumatology care rather than replacing it. Regular sessions tend to help patients hold ground and reduce flare frequency.
