In general, there are many signs of metabolism slow down. In Chinese medicine, there are many signs that can be interpreted as a pattern of disease. Here are eight signs that are associated with a reduced metabolism.
8. Indigestion
Indigestion is when your stomach is unable to process food adequately or quickly enough that it becomes uncomfortable. Signs include belly fullness that feels like something is stuck below your chest and above your stomach. Metabolism begins with the way in which food is mechanically broken down. As larger-than-normal food molecules move through your gastrointestinal tract, they make it harder for cells to process them — leading to a cascade of metabolic dysfunction.
7. Phlegm and Mucus
Phlegm and mucus in Chinese medicine is the product of fluid metabolism. If the body's ability to move and process fluids of mucosal lining is reduced, they can conglomerate into mucus. If they become too thick, sticky, or thin, they can cause damage to mucosal lining or obstruct circulation of other substances.
6. Tendency to be Cold
Metabolism encompasses all cellular metabolic activity, including the process of energy release, which emits heat. Therefore, when you tend to be cold, this may be a sign that your metabolism is slowing. In Chinese medicine, cold causes activity to slow down and things to solidify — food substances may be more likely to turn into fatty deposits.
5. Low Concentration
In Chinese medicine, the spleen and stomach govern digestion and nutrition. At a spiritual level, they regulate the ability to concentrate and process information. If you notice reduced concentration and ability to learn, it might be a sign of slow metabolism.
4. Dryness
When your stomach does not process fluids well, your body may not be able to absorb and circulate enough fluids to its tissues. This may lead to signs of dryness, such as dry itchy eyes, skin, nasal passages, mouth and throat. This can also inadvertently lead to the production of phlegm.
3. Low Appetite
Appetite is regulated by the spleen and stomach in Chinese medicine. If they aren't functioning well, the body will be unable to produce sufficient sensation of hunger. If metabolism is insufficient, the body will reduce hunger sensation to prevent one from eating more than it can process.
2. Low Thirst
Thirst is also regulated by the spleen and stomach in Chinese medicine. Metabolism controls how often someone feels thirsty in a similar way it controls appetite.
1. Low Energy
A sufficient level of metabolism of foods and other nutrient particles is necessary to provide the body enough overall energy to support daily activities. Those who are tired easily or often could be suffering due to lower metabolism.
